What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a powerful technique to address stubborn areas of fat that are not conducive to weight loss and exercise.

Many women complain that despite diet and exercise, they continue to experience unwanted fat in problem areas including the abdomen, love handles, arms, legs, neck or knees.

The procedure involves the use of small incisions and cannulas to remove excess fat.

Downtime is minimal and results are gratifying.

Common Questions:

  1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TUMMY TUCK AND LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a noninvasive (no skin incision and no long scars) procedure that focuses on removal of fat cells, but does not address excess skin.

Liposuction is intended for individuals with good skin elasticity so the skin can “bounce back” after the procedure. For individuals with excess skin, an abdominoplasty or total body lift may be a better option.

Liposuction does not address abdominal wall laxity, or diastasis recti.

However, it is considered a body contouring procedure as it will accentuate feminine features such as a thin waistline and hourglass silhouette. It is used to sculpt, or fine-tune, certain treatment area that do not respond to a healthy lifestyle.

In some patients, it is safe to combine liposuction with an abdominoplasty, depending on where excess fat resides.

  2. HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction procedures are great for individuals who have great skin tone and texture, but who are looking to get rid of stubborn areas of fat in the abdomen, thighs, flanks, back, and arms.

    The ideal liposuction patient:

    • Is close to her/his ideal body weight and are confident they can maintain that weight after the procedure.

    • Has an active lifestyle and good general health. Although fat removal usually is permanent, any cells left behind can continue to grow with weight gain.

    • Has good skin elasticity.

    • Has realistic expectations on what can be accomplished with this procedure.

  3. What is involved in the procedure?

This procedure is routinely done in a surgical facility under general anesthesia for patient safety and best results.

To start the procedure, Dr. Parcells will make several small incisions around the treatment area that will be closed with a stitch and easily concealable in a skin crease.

Dr. Parcells will then inject tumescent solution that is a mix of local numbing medication (lidocaine), epinephrine, and sterile lactated ringers solution to minimize blood loss.

Following this, Dr. Parcells will utilize the most advanced liposuction techniques to ensure that fat removal is performed safely and effectively. The treated areas are closed with suture and a compression garment is placed.

  4. HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE? WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?

On average, this surgery can take several hours depending on the areas of the body being treated.

I recommend overnight hospital observation if a large amount of liposuction is to be performed.

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort for several days following surgery, and are back to their activities of daily living in about a week.

Most patients can return to work in a few days, and can the gym in about 4 weeks.

Patients are in compression garments to reduce swelling and aid in shaping for several weeks after the procedure.

  5. WHERE IS THE SCAR?

Small puncture scars are usually hidden in skin creases or discrete areas and are not easily visible once healed.

  6. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIPOSUCTION, COOLSCULPTING, AND KYBELLA?

All of these procedures are different methods of fat removal.

Liposuction is direct removal by physically breaking up and sucking out the fat.

Coolsculpting is an office-based therapy in which the fat is re-absorbed by the body via cryolypolysis, or freezing.

Kybella is an injectable enzyme that breaks down the fat through a chemical reaction. Kybella is currently only FDA-approved to be used in a small area under the chin.

Coolsculping and Kybella require several in-office treatments spaced weeks to months apart.

Liposuction is usually done in an outpatient surgical facility or hospital as a single treatment.

  7. How much does LIPOSUCTION cost?

Each patient is different and your needs are unique. The cost of this procedure will depend on the conversation between you and Dr. Parcells during your one-on-one consultation.

After reviewing your medical history and discussing your desired goals, Dr. Parcells will perform a physical exam to evaluate your skin tone, laxity, and overall shape.

She will then provide her expert advice and discuss your options to achieve your desired outcome.  She will also address all risks and benefits of the procedures you are interested in. At the end of your consultation, you will meet with our surgical coordinator who will address the logistics and finances of the procedure you are best suited for.

Dr. Parcells is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
